A retainer is an orthodontic tool used after corrective braces are removed. They are worn to make sure the teeth don’t follow the natural tendency to revert position.

The retainer should be worn all the time for the first few months of use, then less frequently as the orthodontist prescribes.

Care should be taken to prevent breakage, since replacement can be fairly expensive. Brush the retainer as your brush your teeth, try to avoid jostling the retainer with your tongue, and be careful where you keep it when it’s not safely in your mouth.
